Sapienza Space Systems and Space Surveillance Laboratory (S5 Lab)

The Sapienza Space Systems and Space Surveillance Laboratory (S5Lab) is a research laboratory at Sapienza University of Rome, primarily aimed at developing space systems such as nano-satellites and stratospheric payloads, while also managing a network of optical observatories for space debris surveillance. The lab is supervised by Professors Fabio Santoni and Fabrizio Piergentili and is known for its hands-on educational approach, involving students in the complete design, development, launch, and operation of CubeSats like IKUNS, LEDSAT, and URSA MAIOR. S5Lab operates the Sapienza Space debris Observatory Network (SSON), an international infrastructure of optical observatories located in Italy, Kenya, and collaborating sites worldwide to monitor space debris and support missions like the Tiangong-1 re-entry campaign.
