The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university in Cape Town, South Africa. Established in 1829 as the South African College, it is the oldest university in South Africa and the oldest in Sub-Saharan Africa in continuous operation. UCT was granted full university status in 1918 and is consistently ranked as the top university in Africa, with global recognition placing it among the world’s top 200 institutions. UCT is organized into six faculties: Commerce, Engineering & the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, and Science, offering programs from bachelor’s to doctoral levels, all taught in English. It is a research-intensive institution with over 60 specialist research units and a strong focus on African-based solutions to global challenges such as climate change, health, and urbanization.
