The Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA), established in 1922, is a prominent organization comprising both amateur and professional astronomers. It originated from the merger of the Cape Astronomical Association (founded in 1912) and the Johannesburg Astronomical Association (founded in 1918). In 1956, it was renamed to reflect its broader regional focus. ASSA has eight autonomous centres located in Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, Hermanus, Garden Route, Midlands, Johannesburg, and Pretoria. These centres host regular meetings and outreach events, welcoming visitors and fostering public interest in astronomy.
