Overview

Located in Bloemfontein, the Naval Hill Planetarium offers a captivating and immersive journey through the universe. As the first fully digital planetarium in Africa south of the Sahara, it utilizes cutting-edge technology to project stunning visuals of everything from the smallest particles to the grandest cosmic structures. Naval Hill Planetarium has a collaboration with the Boyden Observatory formalized under the "Two Observatories Project," a flagship initiative of the University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Managed by the UFS Department of Physics, this project integrates the two facilities to serve different but complementary roles: The Naval Hill Planetarium (The Gateway), located in the heart of Bloemfontein on Naval Hill, it serves as the primary public interface using immersive digital technology to introduce visitors and school groups to astronomical concepts in an accessible, all-weather environment. While the Boyden Observatory (The Deep-Dive), located 26km outside the city, provides the "real sky" experience. It is an active research station where the public can transition from the planetarium's digital simulations to viewing celestial objects through historic and modern telescopes.
