Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD)

The Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) is a joint initiative of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the South African National Research Foundation (NRF), supported by the South African Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI). Established in April 2011 and headquartered at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Cape Town, the OAD leverages astronomy as a tool for sustainable development globally. The OAD's mission is to use astronomy—its practitioners, skills, and infrastructure—to address societal challenges aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
