Overview

The Hartebeesthoek Ground Station, operated by SANSA (South African National Space Agency) Space Operations, is one of the most historically significant and technically advanced space facilities in the Southern Hemisphere. Located in the Magaliesberg mountain range (about 60 km west of Pretoria), its high altitude and "quiet" radio environment make it a premier site for global space missions. It was first established by NASA in 1961 as a Deep Space Station, before being known as the CSIR Satellite Applications Centre (SAC). It was integrated into the SANSA in 2011.
