Overview
Côte d'Ivoire formalised its space governance in June 2025 with the creation of the Agence Spatiale de la Côte d'Ivoire (ASCI) by presidential decree. YAM-SAT-CI 01, the country's first satellite, is a locally designed Earth observation nanosatellite developed by Universal Konstructors Associated in partnership with the Institut National Polytechnique Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Yamoussoukro, providing imagery for coastal monitoring, forest cover analysis, agricultural assessment, and urban planning. ASCI's mandate covers Earth observation, space weather, navigation, telecommunications, and the promotion of domestic expertise. The country hosted the Africa Space Expo 2026 in Abidjan, signalling its intent to establish itself as a regional space hub in West Africa. The University of Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan supports related academic research and engineering education.
