Overview
Kenya's space sector is among the fastest-maturing in East Africa. The Kenya Space Agency (KSA), established in 2017, operates under a Strategic Plan covering 2023 to 2027 and is mandated to promote, coordinate, and regulate space activities nationally. Taifa-1, Kenya's first operational Earth observation satellite, was launched in April 2023 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, developed by Kenyan engineers with support from EnduroSat. The KSA launched the Kenya Earth Observation Data Sharing Framework in partnership with the British High Commission. Kenya is pursuing a commercial spaceport at Kipini between Malindi and Lamu under a Public-Private Partnership model. KSA has formalised a cooperation agreement with the European Space Agency. The University of Nairobi supports space research and human capital development across the sector.
