Overview
Zambia's space programme is in an early infrastructure phase, with the completion of a USD 14 million ground receiving station in Chibombo, Central Province, commissioned in August 2024 and fully operational for satellite data reception and analysis. An Earth observation satellite has been planned for several years, though a confirmed launch timeline is not yet publicly established, with economic challenges including debt restructuring having affected the programme's schedule. Zambia is represented within the African Space Agency through the Southern Africa regional node, inaugurated in Cairo in April 2025. The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority oversees spectrum and satellite licensing. The University of Zambia conducts remote sensing and geospatial research. Zambia does not yet have a dedicated space agency, with coordination functions handled through the Ministry of Technology and Science. The completed ground station positions the country to begin domestic data utilisation ahead of launching its own orbital assets.
