Overview

Zimbabwe established the Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA) in 2018. Zimbabwe launched ZimSat-1 in November 2022, an Earth observation nanosatellite used for drought monitoring, crop health assessment, mining activity mapping, and weather forecasting. ZimSat-2, designed and built by ZINGSA engineers alongside Zimbabwean students at Southwest State University in Russia, followed as a subsequent mission. A third Earth observation satellite, ZimSat-3, is planned to expand orbital capability. Zimbabwe is also seeking financing for a geostationary telecommunications satellite to support national connectivity and its digital economy transition. ZINGSA's mandate spans satellite technology development, geospatial applications, space science research, and human capacity building. The Harare Institute of Technology and the University of Zimbabwe support engineering and geospatial education relevant to the sector. Zimbabwe participates in the Southern Africa regional node of the African Space Agency.
