Overview
Morocco operates one of North Africa's most capable Earth observation programmes. The Royal Centre for Remote Sensing (CRTS), established in 1989 and headquartered in Rabat, coordinates the national remote sensing programme. Mohammed VI-A and Mohammed VI-B, high-resolution optical imaging satellites launched in 2017 and 2018 respectively, enable applications in agricultural monitoring, urban planning, border surveillance, cartography, and disaster response. Morocco signed the Artemis Accords in May 2026, becoming the first North African country to do so. ESA cooperation extends to Earth observation data sharing and capacity building. Morocco has no dedicated national space law, but the CRTS functions as the de facto space authority, with a new national space agency under active consideration. Mohammed VI University in Rabat and other institutions support aerospace engineering and remote sensing research.
