Overview
Uganda's space activities are coordinated through the Aeronautics and Space Science Bureau within the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation. PearlAfricaSat-1, Uganda's first satellite, was launched in 2022 in collaboration with Japanese institutions and is used for environmental monitoring with applications in agriculture and disaster management. Uganda is engaged in the East Africa Development Satellite initiative led by the Egyptian Space Agency for climate change monitoring. An inter-ministerial taskforce is developing a National Aerospace Strategy and roadmap aligned with international space law. Establishment of a national space agency is a stated government objective. Uganda participates in multiple UNOOSA capacity-building programmes. Makerere University hosts space science and remote sensing research. Uganda collaborates with Kenya and Egypt under the EAC space cooperation framework, and its equatorial location is cited as a geographic asset for future ground station and launch infrastructure.
