Overview
Senegal established the Agence Sénégalaise d'Études Spatiales (ASES) in March 2023, making it one of West Africa's newer formal space institutions. GAINDESAT-1A, a 1U CubeSat for environmental imagery and natural resource monitoring, was launched in August 2024 from Vandenberg Space Force Base. A second satellite, GAINDESAT-1B, was assembled entirely by Senegalese engineers, reflecting a deliberate capacity-building approach. ASES has outlined a medium-term pipeline of five to seven additional satellites from 2028. ASES has formalised international partnership agreements and co-launched the Space Climate Observatory with CNES. A doctoral school in space research is planned within the Centre des Hautes Études de Défense et de Sécurité. Senegal Space Week, hosted annually in Dakar, is emerging as a regional convening platform for Francophone African space actors.
