Overview
Ghana's space sector is anchored by the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute (GSSTI) and its successor governance structure, the Ghana Space Agency (GSA), formally established following a National Space Policy launched in November 2024. GhanaSat-1, developed by students from All Nations University in Koforidua with JAXA support, was launched in 2017 as Ghana's first satellite and Africa's first satellite deployed from the International Space Station. Ghana's current satellite pipeline targets multiple additional launches through 2030. GSSTI coordinates cross-sectoral space applications in telecommunications, Earth observation, and education. The University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology host relevant research programmes. Ghana's strategic geographic position near the equator is as an asset for future ground infrastructure and potential commercial launch activities.
