Overview

Tanzania's space sector is formalising rapidly. In early 2026, the government unveiled a Five-Year Strategic Plan for Space Programmes 2025-2030, titled 'From Mount Kilimanjaro, the Peak of Africa, to Space', establishing governance pillars covering institutional frameworks, international engagement, human capital, and infrastructure development. A National Space Policy and companion Space Act are under formulation. Tanzania completed satellite development procurement under a UN-backed KiboCUBE initiative in collaboration with UNOOSA, with the satellite registered with the International Telecommunication Union. The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority published a Satellite Landing Rights Authorisation framework in 2025. The Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) has historically coordinated research and technology policy, with space activities increasingly elevated as a distinct policy domain. Tanzania does not yet have a dedicated space agency, though its establishment is anticipated within the strategic plan period.
