Overview
Ethiopia's space institutional architecture was restructured in 2022 with the merger of the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI) and the Geospatial Information Institute (GII) into the Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI). The Ethiopian National Space Policy, adopted in 2018, provides the governance framework. Ethiopia's ETRSS-1 satellite, a 72 kg remote sensing microsatellite was co-developed with Chinese institutions and launched in December 2019, and ET-SMART-RSS, an 8.9 kg nanosatellite was also developed through Ethiopian-Chinese collaboration, launched in December 2020. SSGI supports applications in agriculture, land use, and disaster management. The Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS), founded in 2004, was instrumental in building political and academic support for the programme. Addis Ababa University and the Addis Ababa Science and Technology University contribute to space science and geospatial research.
