Headline Snapshot Satellites 8

Algeria's space sector doesn't have a single dominant area yet.

Recorded activity for Algeria is still early-stage, spread thinly across orbital activity, international collaboration, and ground infrastructure. Compared with North African countries captured on Spacehubs Africa tracked on the platform, it ranks 4 of 8 by recorded activity. (14 of 55 continent-wide.)

Overview

Algeria operates one of North Africa's most active satellite programmes through the Agence Spatiale Algérienne (ASAL), established in 2002. The National Space Programme, adopted in 2006 as a 15-year framework, established Algeria's Earth observation Alsat series. Alcomsat-1, a geostationary telecommunications satellite, was launched in December 2017. Algeria launched two additional Warth observation satellites in early 2026 — Alsat-3A on 15 January and Alsat-3B on 31 January — both from the Jiuquan space base in China under partnership with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. ASAL initiated construction of a new Space Telecommunications Centre in Bougzoul, Medea Province, in November 2025 to provide backup for national space communications infrastructure. Algeria's programme spans Warth observation, telecommunications, and environmental and resource monitoring. ASAL maintains bilateral cooperation with multiple space agencies and is an IAF member.
